Do it. Whether you’re using a third-party lookup tool or Sony’s legacy support page, verifying the serial number is the cheapest insurance against a bad Vita deal. It won’t tell you if the battery is weak or the screen has OLED burn-in, but it will stop you from buying a banned console – and that alone is worth the effort.

Take a photo of your PS Vita’s serial number label (if legible) and save it somewhere safe. If it fades completely, the software method will still work.
