The story introduces the Arora family, led by the matriarch Sarla, who runs a marriage hall ("Kumkum Bhagya") and dreams of seeing her two very different daughters married.

The first episode of Kumkum Bhagya introduces the main characters and sets the tone for the rest of the series. The episode begins with Prachi (played by Sriti Jha) and her sister Tanu (played by Shabbhir Ahluwalia) living with their mother in a small town. Prachi is a kind-hearted and innocent young woman who is loved by everyone in the family. Tanu, on the other hand, is a beautiful and cunning woman who is often at odds with her sister.
