The film is set in 1939, in the fictional town of Arezzo, Italy. Guido, played by Roberto Benigni, is a kind-hearted and quick-witted man who runs a small bookstore. He falls in love with a schoolteacher, Dora, and they get married. Guido's greatest joy is his young son, Joshua, who is the center of his universe.
